Opium de-addiction camp concludes, 40 former addicts vow not to touch opium

KHONSA, Mar 14: The 15-day opium de-addiction and rehabilitation camp held at Khonsa district hospital concluded here today.

An impressive closing function was held at the community hall in which GBs, Panchayat leaders, Self-Help-Groups, student leaders, opium addicts and their relatives attended. Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion Tirap SP Vikramjit Singh said that the addicts who got treatment in the camp must have the will power to leave the dangerous substance for good and urged them to encourage others also to shun opium. He told the former addicts to engage themselves in gainful activities when they go back to their villages. The SP further said that the contribution of the opium users was necessary for establishment of Opium de-addiction centre at Khonsa. Tirap Deputy Commissioner Dr Sachin Shinde emphatically said that change of mindset was of paramount importance and told the people to get rid of the perpetual defeatist mentality. Shinde underscored the urgent need for establishment of a de-addiction centre at Khonsa to effectively address the menace of opium addiction for which all must pursue with the government. The DC said that the former addicts should help the district administration and the Police to trace out the source of opium and the people involved in the trade to enable them to break the supply chain. He later presented gifts to the Members of resource persons from Maharashtra as a goodwill gesture. Dr Milind Potdar, Psychiatrist, Society for Wellbeing, Awareness and Rehabilitation [SWAR], Mumbai in his speech expressed happiness over the stupendous success of the 15-day de-addiction camp and profusely thanked the Deputy Commissioner and the DMO and his staff for their unstinted help and support. He however, said that there was still a long way to go to effectively address the burgeoning  problem of opium addiction in the district adding that social changes did not happen in a few days. Tirap DMO Dr K. Perme said that the opium de-addiction  and rehabilitation camp was a great success  and he attributed the success to Tirap Deputy Commissioner for his constant supervision, support and advice. He urged the addicts who received treatment in the camp to tell the other opium addicts to attend such camps in future. Some of the former addicts who spoke on the occasion thanked the district administration, SWAR, DMO and others for conducting the camp. They vowed not to  touch opium again. They all said that they got new lives after the camp.

The much-needed camp was conducted jointly by Tirap District Health Society and Mumbai-based NGO Society for Wellbeing, Awareness and Rehabilitation [SWAR].  DIPRO

 

 

FGA conducts orientation prog for SHGs

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: Sixteen Self Help Groups (SHGs) federation members under Future Generations Arunachal (FGA) from Mechuka, Koyu (Rina village), Sille-Oyan, Yazali-Yachuli, Ziro and Palin participated in two day training-cum Orientation program organized by FGA at Mahila Shakti Kendra (MASK), Balipara, Assam on March 12&13.

Byabang Rocket, FGA Board Chairperson, appreciated the efforts of FGA in mobilization of rural communities and SHGs. He called upon the SHG to make best use of the training program to acquire practical knowledge and skill on SHG functioning, economic activities and the bank linkages.

The session performed case studies of SHGs of Balipara highlighting the problems and other issues that are affecting the success of the SHG in the area.

Nawang Gurung, Consultant, briefed the participants about all aspects of functioning of SHGs, formation of bye-laws, record keeping, internal loan management and relationship with government officials and nodal NGOs. There was details interaction among the participants in management of SHG federation and its funds. The participants expressed gratefulness to FGA for imparting training program and making them known the activities being carried out by the SHG federation members of Balipara area initiated by the MASK people.  They gave field demonstration on dish-washing powder making, handbags and cane-bamboo crafts.

The training concluded with formation of Central Coordinating Committee (CCC) of SHG federation under FGA.

 

 

Tuki to flag off BJM

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: To rekindle the great spirit of Mahan Bharat as propagated by great Gandhians like Baba Amte and living Gandhian Dr S N Subba Rao, the 3rd month-long Bharat Jodo Movement (BJM) or Knit India Movement would be flagged off by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki at Indira Gandhi Park here at 8 am tomorrow.

The event coincides with the silver jubilee year of 2nd BJM in 1988-89 (Itanagar to Okha) and (2nd was in 1985-86 from Kanyakumari to Kashmir) led by Baba Amte,  in which  around 125 youths from different states were pedalled on bicycles permanently and approximately 75 joined the marches intermittently at different places to spread the message of unity and integrity.

 About 40 Gandhians from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maha-rashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal and eight North East states, including 73-year-old Sun-daresan (coordinator of all three events) led by Dr Rao, director of National Youth Project and member National Integration Council, in a motorcade would travel from Itanagar to Shantiniketan. NYP, Arunachal Pradesh is the local coordinator of the event.

 “The sun rises in the East from Arunachal Pradesh and sets in the West and Baba Amte had launched the second movement from Itanagar for which the venue is selected to give greater exposure to this still unknown land and its great people, their rich culture and traditions to the rest of India,” said Sundaresan.

 “Baba Amte moved by questions from a Naga girl-- “Why all saints and philosophers travel from Kashmir to Kanyakumari? Are we (the people of NE) not part of India? – had decided to launch his 2nd movement from Itanagar,” said another coordinator Anil Hebber.

While the Gandhians would be meeting civil society throughout their journey to establish rapport that ‘NE is part of India’, the movement would continue to cover the entire nation, Sundaresan said. Hebber pitched in to add that some concrete programmes proposed includes laying the foundation for 'Youth Emergency Service (YES)' as an all India network of youth, fully prepared to face any emergencies and bring solace to the suffering.

CM lauds Mebo people

Kiyit (East Siang), Mar 14: Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today lauded the people of Mebo constituency in East Siang district for their hard work put into providing food grains to the region.

A vast plain land along the banks of River Siang, Mebo is considered as rice bowl of the Siang belt.

Attending a massive Congress Rally at Kiyit village, 12 km from Mebo town, Tuki praised the people for being pioneers in the field of education and politics.

The rally was organized by the Block Congress Committee of Mebo to officially welcome the joining of local MLA Ralom Borang and his supporters into Congress party recently. Borang had contested in the last Assembly elections from NCP.

Tuki called upon the people to continue to guide the state in the path of development.

To a rousing applause of the gathering, Tuki informed that the Center has approved establishment of an Agriculture College at Pasighat and expressed optimism that his prophesy of Pasighat becoming an educational hub of the state is coming true.  He urged Congress workers to keep faith in the party and assured that party will strive hard to work for the development of citizen irrespective of caste and creed.

Responding to a memorandum submitted by local MLA Ralom Borang, Tuki promised to sanction required fund for maintenance of Mebo-Dhola road in the next financial year. He also announced Rs 2 crore for construction of Cement-Concrete Raod for Mebo township and sufficient funds for flood control measures as per the recommendations of the Central Team which had recently visited the area.

The CM also emphasized that money for flood control to be sent by centre will be distributed to the affected people and he will never allow any fund to be diverted.

APCC President Mukut Mithi called on Congress workers to maintain unity and ensure that Congress wins forthcoming Panchayat election with thumping majority.

Earlier, while submitting the memorandum to CM, local MLA Ralom Borang expressed hope that party will do much better in coming years and said Mebo under leadership of CM Tuki will witness major development.

Two veteran Congress leaders Toya Pertin and Anggong Megu were felicitated on the occasion. Both of them are associated with the party since 1972.

Lohit district holds meeting on employment generation target

TEZU, Mar 14: A meeting of Gaon Burahs/Panchayat members and Private sector employers of Lohit district on employment generation was held in the conference hall of DC’s office here yesterday under the chairmanship of MK Deori, SDO (HQ).

District Labour and Employment Officer Ozing Rukbo explaining the aims and objectives of the meeting informed that the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh has given a commitment to the public that during the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17) at least one lakh unemployed youth of the state will be given gainful employment opportunities including self employment. Accordingly, the govt. has constituted the Arunachal Pradesh Employment Generation Council (APEGC) at state level and the district employment generation council in the district level under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary and Deputy Commissioner respectively to monitor and to achieve this ambitious target. He also informed that govt. has assigned Lohit to provide employment to 9000 youth during the entire plan period and 2250 in the next financial year. To achieve this target, he sought coordinated efforts and cooperation from village authorities, public and private sector employers and requested them to explore ways and means to generate maximum number of employment opportunities and appointments done in Lohit district. He hoped that individual interest and concerted efforts from all can lead to achieve the target.

The chairman explained that jobs in govt. departments are limited and hence our focus should be on self-employment, entrepreneurship development and employment in public and private sector establishments. He asked every private sector employer to come up with the record of employment opportunities available in their establishments well in advance to the Deputy Commissioner so that the District Employment Generation Council can have the record of availability of employment opportunities and the number of employment given in the entire Lohit district.

He appealed private employers to appoint more and more unemployed youth of the district in their establishments.

The meeting turned into a live discussion as the members present have started actively participating and cleared their apprehensions.

Gaon burahs and Panchayat members have vowed to carry the message to their respective areas and ensure monitoring and supervision to generate more employment opportunities and encourage mass registration of job seekers.

All members have assured to create database record of unemployment of their respective jurisdictions.

Few members have suggested that govt. should provide unemployment allowance to the educated unemployed youth who are at all not provided with employment opportunities. Few have denounced provision for demanding production of Land Possession Certificate by some financial institutions while applying loan, rather should concede with a certificate issued by village authority in place of LPC.

Single person availing self employment benefits from govt. for more than once should be checked as such cases are depriving chances of others to self employed. Selection of non interested and undeserved candidates and more so, non viability of the approved schemes are also another hurdle for getting self employed. DIPRO

 

 

Paktu people take out rally, demands renovation of Paktu Linn

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: All Ato Paktu Ao Welfare Society (AAPAWS), West Siang district  organized a Paktu Linn Higi Dukka rally on March 12 at Aalo as a mark of protest against destruction /demolition of Ato Paktu Foundation stone by miscreants on January 10 after the death of Goto Yudik at Aalo.

Later, the Paktu people gathered at Donyi Polo Dere Aalo and adopted  seven-point resolutions.

First of all Paktu people vehemently condemned the incident that happened during the Galo Day celebration as it has tarnished the image of Galo community in general  and Aalo area in particular.

While condemning the desecration Paktu Linn without provocation by miscreants, the Paktu people demanded the Dumporijo Galo brothers to renovate the desecrated Paktu Linn within three months “as they have accepted responsibility of the same.”  The GWS is  also pleaded to use their good office to resolve and settle the matter within the stipulated time as the Paktu Linn discretion has taken placed during Galo day celebration.

While referring a news item published in a section of local daily on January 23 last the AAPAWS said that as per the Action Committee ‘angry mourners from Upper Subansiri district had claimed the responsibility of the destruction of the Paktu Heritage pillar in the wee hours of the 11th January 2013.’  The Action Committee had also reportedly appealed to the complainants to immediately withdraw their FIR lodged against some prominent public and student leaders and others in Aalo Police Station.

The Paktu people threatened to boycott the Galo Welfare Society and find out alternative ways and means to seek justice if the same is not resolved within stipulated time.

The Paktu people during the meeting also “condemned the poor leadership of local MLA and Transport Minister Jarkar Gamlin” during and after the Galo Day incident. They also vehemently criticized the role of then GWS president and condemned “utter silence of GWS” regarding the desecration of Paktu Linn.”  “The Paktu people being victim of the nefarious activities of students’ organizations such as GSU and AGSU, they are prohibited from carrying out any activities at Aalo area without the confidence of Paktu people,” the society said in its memorandum.

Other points of memorandum during the meeting resolved that Paktu people will take necessary action against its own people if found involved in activities directed against Paktu general interest.

While referring to the reported damages of public/private properties at Aalo and some other places after 10th January Aalo incident,  the meeting  demanded the state Govt to provide adequate compensation to victims.

 

 

60 acres of poppy plants destroyed in Lazu circle

KHONSA, Mar 14: In a well-co-ordinated ‘mission poppy plant destruction’ on March 11 and 12  in the jhum fields of Lazu and Noglo areas in Lazu circle, bordering Myanmar, about 60 acres of standing poppy plants, the raw material for opium, were completely destroyed. The team was led by the Circle officer NL Naam and was ably assisted by the Police, CRPF and 1st Assam Rifles personnel.

Poppy destruction was carried out on a massive scale. The entire process of the operation was peaceful and the farmers did not protest ostensibly realizing that the fault was theirs. There were no untoward incidents.

When contacted the Circle Officer said, “The villagers were warned again and again not to grow poppy in their fields. They were also told that the government was ready to provide poultry, cardamom and other alternative source of income to replace opium cultivation but they did not pay heed to the advice. So, this strong action had to be launched.” He thanked the Police and the jawans of CRPF and Assam Rifles for their co-operation.

It may be mentioned here that an intensive campaign against opium addiction has been launched in Tirap district by the district administration. The awareness campaign against opium cultivation and opium addiction was inaugurated by HE Governor of Arunachal Pradesh on 11th December at Khonsa amidst a huge gathering. A de-addiction camp is also going on at District Hospital, Khonsa under the supervision of a Maharastra-based NGO. In the meanwhile Tirap Deputy Commissioner Dr Sachin Shinde has congratulated CO Naam and his team for effectively carrying out the operation adding that no poppy growers would be spared.

 

 

Ramakrishna remembered

AALO, Mar 14: The 178th birthday of Sri Ramakrishna was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety at Ramakrishna Mission, Aalo yesterday.

Various programmes were organised in the Main Prayer Hall during the day-long celebration.

Swami Purnajnana-nanda, who has recently taken charge of the Aalo Ramakrishna Mission as its Secretary dwelt at length on the life and teachings of Ramakrishna and advised the gathering to imbibe his noble teachings as these values hold strong relevance in today’s context.

There were devotional singing by monks, staff and students. It was noteworthy that the students sang melodious devotional songs in Galo language.

Presence of alumni and managing committee members enhanced the felicity of the celebrations.

There was an introductory reading in Hindi on the brief life-history of Sri Ramakrishna, followed by an interesting rendering of his teachings by Raken Padu, ASP, Aalo.

The brief life and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna were read out in Galo dialect by K Riba, a teacher of the Mission.

DLMC meeting reviews achievements under various schemes

DAPORIJO, Mar 14: The District Level Monitoring Committee (DLMC) meeting was held under the chairmanship of Upper Subansiri Deputy Commissioner at Rijo Conference hall here.

Physical achievements and financial status of various schemes, such of SPA, NLCPR, NEC etc. were highlighted by the executive agencies of various department through Power-Point presentation.

Various problems in execution of works at different stages were also discussed by all departments concerned. According to them, technical and land compensation claim by land owners have been the major problem.

Every HOD concerned briefed their ongoing works and total number of work awarded to them.

During the meeting it was also found that, many works under different scheme were yet to be completed.

DLMC Chairman cum Deputy Commissioner Tahang Taggu informed the work executing agency of various scheme to strictly follow the guidelines of the scheme and maintain quality of work. He suggested the officers to go to work place and physically verify the work done.

He asked the department of WRD, PWD, Dumporijo Division, and DMO concerned to give their presentation and report before the DLMC as there were no any representatives from those departments during the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner cum DLMC chairman sought the present status of two schemes under department of Horticulture at Chetam Circle.

Zilla Parishad Member of the Chetam Circle, Y Lote claimed that she was never informed about the schemes by authority concerned and expressed her willingness to accompany the District Monitoring Committee to Chetam circle, where the scheme is located to take stock of progress of the work.

The meeting was headed by District Planning Officers cum Member Secretary District Level Monitoring Committee, Same Timba.

Various Head of the Departments, Panchayat Raj Institute members attended the meeting.

 

 

SDP for rural SHG members  concludes

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: The week-long intensive Practical Skill Development Training programme for Rural Women SHG Members in Tailoring and Cutting was concluded here yesterday at Arunachal Pradesh Seva Sangh head office, Doimukh, Papum Pare with a simple and impressive valedictory function presided by its Chairman, Rakhi Tana Tara.

The training was organized by Arunachal Pradesh Seva Sangh with joint collaboration with Rich India and USHA International which was successfully attended by Rural Women SHG members from villages of Midpu-I, Midpu-III, Tumro, Lekha, Sango, Kakhila, Balijan and Gayi Basti successfully completed the training under the longtime Instructress, Maldeb Lahi.

Attending the valedictory function, Doimukh EAC M Padung applauded the various trainings activities of Arunachal Pradesh Sangh to empower women economically. She said “educating women is akin to educating the society.” She said through this tailoring and cutting training and its proper utilization, the women can earn handsome amount even in part time and save the household expenses of the family.

The EAC gave away the 10 Tailoring Machines sponsored by the USHA International, Rich India and Arunachal Pradesh Seva Sangh jointly to the Rural Women SHG members on the occasion.

The ZPM, Doimukh, Tana Bado congratulated the trainees and called upon them to properly utilize the knowledge they have gained during the training. He also suggested the women to look after their children’s education properly in the world of cut throat competition.

The State BJP President, Tai Tagak, special invitee, congratulated the trainees for completing the training successfully and said their products which were displayed speak about their learning skills. He emphasized and called for creating true entrepreneurial atmosphere in our people.

Chairman, APSS, Rakhi Tana Tara has called for hard work with dedication and commitment to better our life. He advised the trainees to put good use of the tailoring machines distributed to them and come for any further technical support to APSS, if required.

Earlier, Secretary, APSS, Vishal Nath Rai highlighted the activities and keynote about the training programmes its methodology and mission of the ‘Silai School’ programme.

Bandh called off

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: All Papum Pare District Students’ Union (APPDSU) after a threadbare discussion with Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today has decided to defer the 12 hours Capital Bandh called on March 15. The decision came after an hour-long meeting where the five point memorandum submitted by the Union was discussed thoroughly.

The Chief Minister clarified on all the five points and assured that Government would have a detail discussion with all the stake holders before passing the bill pertaining to creation of Capital district. The Chief Minister further asked the union to meet in the first week of April on the creation of Capital district and any other issue of APPDSU.

 

Tezu APTST collects highest revenue

TEZU, Mar 14: Inspite of acute shortage of manpower, infrastructure and without departmental vehicle, the team of officials led by S Tayang, District Transport Officer, has collected revenue to a tune of Rs 1,11,51,631 from motor vehicle Tax/Fees before the end of financial year. (i.e, 1st April 2012 to 28th February, 2013). This is the highest revenue ever been collected from MV sector of Lohit district.

It is expected that the revenue will cross Rs.1.20 crore till the end of March, 2013. DIPRO

 

Free coaching concludes

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: UGC-Coaching Centre for Entry in Services, Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar conducted free coaching for the aspirants of UPSC, APPSC civil services examinations from September 24, 2012 to March 14, 2013.

Dr. M.Q. Khan, the coordinator informed in a press release that the six months long free coaching on all components of combined civil services were very effective and successful.  

 

State BJYM new team vows to maintain party ideology

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: The newly appointed office bearers of state Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) led by Dug Saha (president) has stressed the need of maintaining party ideology, discipline and team works.

They also advocated for good politics and emphasized on nationalism, humanism, secularism and Gandhian philosophy.

Earlier, all the new office bearers were administered the oath of organizational pledge by the State BJYM President.

 

APAOA demands security for agri  director

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture officers’ Association (APAOA), in a memorandum has demanded the Chief Minister to provide foolproof security both at Directorate of Agriculture office Naharlagun, and official residence of the Director Agriculture in view of the alleged regular threatening to the Director by some miscreants to award supply works etc.

“The matter has already been informed to the govt. through letter (No: Commr.(Agri)/ Security-1/2013, Dtd: 9th March 2013) requesting for providing security. But no action has been initiated by the govt till date.

The association further resolved to avail en' mass casual leave till the end of financial year 2012-13 in the event of failure to provide security within two days effective from March 15.

Meanwhile, the association strongly condemned the recent report of physical assault on the Director of School Education at his office and appealed to the Govt. to take appropriate action against the persons involved in the incident.  

 

Appeal for creation of two more districts

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) has strongly appealed the state government for creation of two districts namely Kamle District by bifurcating Lower Subansiri district with Raga as it headquarter and Pakke-Kessang District by bifurcating East Kameng district and Lemmi as its headquarters.

In a two-point memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, ANYA stated that these two areas- Kamle and Pakke-Kessang - being so large in area with various other favourable factors deserves developments in many fronts like socio-economic and infrastructure.  Moreover, these areas are isolated from its original district headquarters and strategic from inter-state boundary point of view and creation of district will not only benefit the local people of area but also the state, it added and fervently appealed the govt to look into the matter and do the needful.  

 

Society mourns student death

ITANAGAR, Mar 14:  Giyha-Ku Welfare Society (GKWS)  and All Nyori Development Committee have deeply mourned sudden demise of Yorna Shonitha, a student of class VIII at VKV school Old Ziro who died today at state hospital Naharlagun.  Late Shonitha was daughter of Yorna Tama former president of the society. In its condolence message it termed the death as irreparable loss to family and the society.

 

Employees threaten stir

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: The Arunachal Pradesh Tribal Job Contract Employees Union today threatened to launch stir against the NEEPCO Ltd, if the authority fails to declare the interview results of C &D category job within 31st  March 2013.

In a release the union claimed that NEEPCO authority has assured them to declare C &D category results within 31 March 2013.

 

PR terms allegation baseless

ITANAGAR, Mar 14:   Reacting to some organizations’ demand for re- tendering of SPA scheme under PWD Raga after the report of bash up came during the tendering process on March 7, a group of Anchal Samity Member today opposed the demand for retendering by claiming that alleged loopholes and malpractice in bidding process was baseless. ITANAGAR, Mar 14: Tali Township Development Committee in a four-point memorandum addressed to the local MLA has called for construction of departmental buildings for newly upgraded ADC headquarters site at Tongrung Mana, shifting of department divisions from Ziro to Tali, construction of bridge over Kamala River and immediate supply of drinking water at Tongrung Mana town.

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: In a six point representation addressed to the Chief Minister, All Arunachal Pradesh Tribal Welfare Association has called upon the state govt for re-enactment of APCOCA Act 2002, deletion of voter list of refugees from electoral rolls and to bring a permanent solution to refugee issue, permanent demarcation and construction of boundary wall along the Inter-State boundary, cancellation of series of MoUs/MoAs on single river and enactment of strong criminal law.

 

Calls for clearance of AE backlog posts

ITANAGAR, Mar 14: All Arunachal Pradesh Unemployed Engineers’ Association has appealed the Public Health Engineering Department for immediate clearance of backlog Assistant Engineer’s (AE) posts against direct recruit quota and to issue requisition for vacant posts of AE to the APPSC.

In a letter addressed to the Parliamentary Secretary for PHED & Water Supply, Association claimed that since 2010 to 2013 PHED department has allowed 44 posts of AE on promotion and recruited only 27 posts in direct quota keeping 17 posts in backlog which is not only illegal but an act of deprivation to the genuine candidates.

It strongly appealed the PS to look into the matter and instruct his department to clear all the backlog posts and issue the requisition letter to the APPSC.

Women, children and disaster management

More than 100 delegates from over 20 countries met in Helsinki to discuss how to make sure countries around the world can better prevent the fallout of conflicts, war and disasters from reversing the gains in development, economic growth and provision of services to their people in the future global development agenda.

The United Nations-convened dialogue considered how the nature of conflicts and violence is changing. There is now one casualty from a recognized war for nine casualties of organized crime and intra-state conflicts.

Many leaders therefore believe that the new face of conflict requires a new solution and a new response from governments and the international community.

Conflicts, wars and disasters have a detrimental impact on society, economy and environment. For example, the lengthy conflict in Somalia resulted in the loss of a generation of young people who are missing out on the opportunity to achieve higher education -- this phenomenon is referred to in Somalia as a 'national disaster.'

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 70 percent of children have no access to school because of the extended conflict.

Recent research concludes that countries which experienced major violence in the period between 1981 and 2005 have poverty rates 21 percent higher than those which did not experience violence. Violence claims about half a million victims each year.

The latest analysis from the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) states that for the first time in history, the world has experienced three consecutive years during which the US$100 billion threshold for economic losses from disasters has been surpassed. On average, the lives of over 200 million people are disrupted by disasters each year.
